What are dentures?

People with missing teeth can experience a wide range of problems. For instance, some may have issues smiling because they are worried about their appearance, while others may face experience problems while they are eating or speaking.

Dentures are a popular medical appliance that are created to replace missing teeth in people and can bring back the oral features that were lost. A full denture is used when all of the patient’s teeth are missing whilst a partial denture is needed when two or more teeth are missing.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are two types of dentures – complete dentures and partial dentures.

Complete dentures – these dentures are based on plastic that comes in a colour that mimics the gum tissue. They are featuring a full set of porcelain or plastic teeth.

Partial dentures – these dentures are based on plastic or metal framework. They are designed to support a specific number of teeth that are missing.

How are dentures made?

Dentures are made about eight to twelve weeks after the patient has lost or extracted teeth. The procedure starts when the CDT takes a few moulds or impressions of the oral tissues which will be used support for the denture. It’s the lab technician that creates the dentures, but the CDT will have to check the patient a few times before the dentures are finished and placed. It usually takes between 4 and 5 weeks for the process to be finished. It’s very likely that you will have to visit the CDT a few more times in the first month for adjustments.

Will dentures affect the way a person looks, feels, eats, and speaks?

With the help of dentures, patients can expect to bring back or even improve their appearance. It might take a few weeks to get used to the dentures, but after that, you can eat almost any kinds of food, speak freely and smile without worrying about your appearance.

Are dentures worn throughout the day?

Patients are advised to wear their dentures during the day and remove them at night. In the first week, you will probably have to wear the dentures all the time in order to let the dentures adjust to your gum tissues.

How does one take care of dentures?

Just like teeth, dentures require proper care. You must clean them on a daily basis with the help of a toothbrush with soft bristles. You should also rinse your mouth. There are a wide range of denture products that will help you with this process.

Should I use a denture adhesive?

Denture wearers can use denture adhesive for additional support of their dentures. With the help of this adhesive (or denture cream as some manufacturers call it), retention and stability can be improved significantly.

How long do dentures last?

If you take good care of your dentures, you should be able to wear them for at least five years without any problems. After a period of time, the jawbone may shrink and make the denture feel loose. Damages to the denture can be fixed by dental labs. CDTs provide tips and advice about extending the life of dentures and tell you when you need to get a new denture.
